American Iris Society Region 8 Fall Regional meeting
featuring Marty Schafer & Jan Sacks

Saturday, November 5th in Madison, WI
Sunday, November 6th in Minneapolis, MN

This Fall we are again splitting up our meeting between Madison and Minneapolis to make it more convenient for members to attend without having to travel too far.  This seemed to work well last year when John Coble from Ensata Gardens was our speaker.  Meeting locations are as follows:

Saturday, November 5th in Madison starting at 9:30 am
West Madison Agricultural Research Station, University of Wisconsin
8502 Mineral Point Road, Verona, WI 53593   608-262-2257

Sunday, November 6th in Minneapolis starting at 11:00 am
Bachman's Flagship Store and Corporate Office,  Heritage Room, 6010 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55419  612-861- 7600.

We are very fortunate this year to have as our speakers,  Marty Schafer and Jan Sacks, owners of  Joe Pye Weed's Garden in Massachusettes. Joe Pye Weed's Garden supplies Iris Versicolor,  Siberian Iris, and Species and Interspecies hybrids.  Marty and Jan are leading experts on species iris and are among the elite Siberian iris hybridizers working today.  Their presentation will be on their hybridizing program and will include one hour of judges training on Siberians in Madison and one hour of judges training on Species iris in Minneapolis.  This Spring, I really enjoyed their presentation on Species iris at the American Iris Society National Convention in New Jersey. Other convention attendees appeared to be suitably impressed.

Due to a Daylily Society meeting around lunch time in Madison which quite a few of our Iris Society members want to participate in,  we have moved up the time in Madison to 9:30 am. This should give us a chance to get in the presentations by Marty and Jan before the other meeting.  At Madison there will be a pot-luck lunch as well, so please bring something to share if you can.  We can hold a Region 8 business meeting as time permits after the presentations.

The meeting in Minneapolis at Bachman's Heritage room will start at 11:00.  Our goal is to finish around 3:00 in order to have Marty and Jan at the airport at 4:00.  Coffee, water, and a light snack will be served.

If anyone has something they would like to have discussed at either meeting, please send me an email at

Looking forward to seeing you at the presentation.  Let's give Marty and Jan a gracious midwest welcome!

Tim Moore,  RVP Region 8.
